Summary:
It’s Jack’s first year as a teacher and he meets Alex Gaskarth, the quiet pretty boy in his English
class who reminds him a lot of himself, unsure if that’s a good thing or not.

"No," the older man finally answers, though it isn’t what either of them wanted him to say. "Alex, I can’t, I want to, but I can’t."

The younger boy is looking at him with teary eyes, on the brink of crying again, because he really thought Jack would have said yes. “Jack,” he pleads, pushing his forehead into his neck, willing the tears away when he feels Jack’s hands clasp around his waist. He just wants to stay here forever with him. “Please, Jack, I-I can’t…” He stops, debating if it will help his argument or not and then continues. “I can’t go home.”

Jack’s full eyebrows knit together, a frown settling on his face as he takes hold of the shorter boy’s shoulders, pushing him back slightly to read his features. “Why can’t you go home?” He asks, voice so gentle as his hand moves to Alex’s face, his thumb running along his cheekbone.

Alex’s eyes flash downward, ashamed to even have to tell Jack, afraid of what he’ll say. “My mom, she found out about us.”

Jack’s hand freezes on his face, and he nods, frown still evident on his handsome face. “And she kicked you out.” He finishes and Alex shakes his head.

"I left," he states, still avoiding Jack’s eyes. "I had to sleep in my car last night, but I eventually just went to Cassadee’s. I don’t know what she’ll do when I go home, Jack.”

He nods, wrapping the hand that was on the younger boy’s cheek around his neck, pulling him into his chest. “I have to talk to her.”

"No," he argues, tipping his head up to look Jack in the eyes. "No you don’t have to do that."

"Alex, what if she calls the police?" He mumbles, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I have to talk to her; try to calm her down."

The younger sighs in defeat, nodding against his shoulder. He isn’t sure what to say, but then Jack opens his mouth, mumbling the words into his hair. “I love you.”

Alex smiles despite himself and the situation, because he’s missed hearing those words from Jack. “I love you, too.”

Alex has just pulled up to his house, and he’s waiting for Jack, who had followed him over here. He had really been hoping his mom was at work, but to his disappointment, her car was parked in the driveway.

He watches in his rear view mirror as Jack turns the corner, pulling up behind his parked car and shutting the engine off. He has no idea what Jack is planning on saying in there, but he sure hopes it’s convincing.

Jack gets out first, waiting for Alex and letting him lead the way. Alex stops on the steps, sighing and turning to face Jack, taller than him for once because of the stairs. “You’ll do great,” he says, running a hand through his dark hair.

The older man smiles, leaning in to Alex’s touch and turning his head, kissing his palm. “And you’ll be okay.” He reassures, motioning for Alex to open the door.

He sighs again, pushing the door open pulling Jack inside by his wrist, dropping it when he sees his mother’s head snap towards the door from where she’s sat on the couch.

"Alexander, where have you been?!" She starts, clearly annoyed. Jack takes a step into the room, standing next to Alex and clearing his throat. The woman immediately stands up, eyeing Jack.

"Isobel," he says, voice calm. "I do hope you remember me." He smiles wide, seeing the woman’s cheeks turn pink at the memory.

She nods, still slightly confused before she starts putting the pieces together. “Oh,” she says, eyes widening, frowning. “It’s you.”

Jack doesn’t pretend to play dumb, just nods. “It is,” he starts reaching for Alex’s hand and twining their fingers together. “Isobel, I’m not sure if you remember what I said to you that night, about being in love, but the person I was taking about was your son.”

Alex is looking at Jack with happy eyes, and he thinks it’s because he likes hearing Jack talk about their relationship and falling in love. His eyes are glued to Jack’s face, adoration radiating from him as his boyfriend speaks.

"You are not to touch my son," she growls, pointing to their interlocked hands. "You’re disgusting. He’s a teenager," she spits, and Alex only tightens his fingers in Jack’s hold, feeling awfully defensive.

"Don’t talk to him like that," he voices, upper lip curling in anger. "I’m old enough to make my own decisions, this wasn’t just Jack’s doing. It isn’t like he seduced me into the relationship, mom, I want to be with him.”

Jack smiles briefly, proud that his boy would stick up for him like that, but the words his mother speaks next makes him feel like he was punched in the stomach.

"He’s using you, Alex, can’t you see that?"

Now it’s Jack’s turn to growl, taking a protective stance in front of Alex. “How dare you say that. Alex is everything to me, not that you’d know that because you’re never around long enough to take an interest in your only son’s life.”

He’s mad, his face red as he spits his words at the woman in front of him. “Do you know who takes care of Alex when he’s sick? Or comforts him when asshole kids at school beat the shit out of him? Because it sure as hell isn’t you. He’s practically lived at my house all year, but did you notice?”

She’s just standing there, taking his insults as they come, holding in the tears because she knows his words are true.

"Don’t you tell me I’m using him. I love him more than life, and if that makes me disgusting, then I don’t really give a fuck."

Alex looks up to Jack, smiling at him, as if to say, I think we just won. But then Isobel clears her throat, bringing their attention.back to her.

"I’ll call the police. He’s your student; you’ll go to jail."

Alex shakes his head, as if he’s ashamed she would say that. “If you call the cops,” he breaths, voice calm though he’s anything but. “You will never see me again.”

She’s shocked, totally not expecting that.

"Now, there are two options here," Jack starts, squeezing Alex’s fingers. "Now that you know, you can support us, or not. It’s up to you."

She doesn’t say anything then, sitting down on the couch, Alex pulling Jack to sit down on the one opposite of her.

"And can I just say," the older man adds offering a charming smile, hoping to pull her onto their side. "I’m sorry about insulting you as a mother. But I won’t stand for someone talking down on my relationship, ma’am," he pauses, looking down to their linked fingers, blushing. "He’s all I’ve got, Ms. Gaskarth. I never meant to hurt you, but we need support on this."

He looks up to Alex and sees him also blushing at Jack’s sweet words. He gives a gentle nod at the older man before turning his attention back to his mother.

"How come you never told me?" She asks, and her voice doesn’t sound annoyed or upset, just genuinely confused; hurt, even.

"Do you see how you reacted, mom?" He retorts, chuckling a little. "That’s why. I knew you’d react like this. I wanted to, but I knew it wouldn’t be good for me and Jack."

She nods, understanding. “Well, Alex,” she starts, rubbing her temples. “I suppose you are nineteen, and if he makes you happy, that’s all I can ask for, isn’t it?”

Alex nearly chokes on his own tongue, dropping Jack’s hand and standing pulling his mother up, into his arms. He smiles, feeling her arms wrap around him and moves up, kissing her cheek. “Thank you,” he smiles, pulling away. “You don’t know how much this means to me, mom.”

She pulls him back in, kissing his forehead. “You love him, I get it.” She suddenly brings a hand up, running it through his hair. “I like your hair. Looks good on you, sweetie.”

He mumbles a thank you before letting go, and backing up, straight into Jack’s chest who only smiles down at him, kissing his hair before passing him and wrapping long arms around Isobel’s shoulders. “I didn’t mean what I said; you’re a great mother. I really am sorry.”

"You were defending yourself, I get it," she laughs. "But if you hurt my son, I’ll kill you."

This time Jack laughs, dropping his arms after promising that he would never dream of hurting Alex.

The rest of the evening was spent how Alex had envisioned his future; cooking and eating dinner with his mom and boyfriend, spending the night cuddled on his couch watching Greys Anatomy reruns with the two most important people in his life.

He’s glad Jack denied his offer of leaving; he knows it would have hurt his mother, and he loves her too much to do that. Especially after her ending up being pretty cool with their relationship.

So yeah, he thinks he can deal with waiting a few months run away with Jack, and by run away he means move in, obviously.
